If you haven't yet been acquainted with the Goethe, you should read this tale of romanticism gone afoul in The Sorrows of Young Werther. Love is usually considered a good & necessary element of life, but when Werther's beloved Lotte informs him of her engagement to Albert, it becomes a heavy burden upon his soul. If poor Werther had only been patient, perhaps the pain of his unrequited love with Lotte would have been dispelled.
